The Crossing |
||||||||||
I enjoy blending many styles, and here we have a light, multi-metric theme, contrasted with a heavier funk rock theme, well anchored by bassist Rick Steffens. Joe Caploe's vibes solo is in a fusion/Latin style. Violinist Erik Golub exchanges nonsymmetrical phrases with my guitar, and the whole thing wraps up with a nice coda performed by The Kronos Quartet. Drummer Curt Moore's deft rhythmic concept makes the piece flow. |

From my CD, The Crossing, featuring a blazing David Grisman solo. When my full orchestral arrangement received its European premier, it received 5-minute standing ovations at the famed Hercules and Prinzregenten theaters in Munich, Germany. |

I was able to digitally enhance recordings taken from the original wax cylinders (1912-1918) of Ishi, the last Yahi, singing the songs of his extinct tribe. |

Ode to Joy Blues |
||||||||||
"Ode to Joy Blues" for saxophone quartet begins with the baritone sax playing the famous bass melody of Ode to Joy in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (fourth movement). The other saxes enter playing Beethoven's variations of the theme until, with a sudden rhythmic shift, they find themselves playing in a contemporary jazz style. In this audio clip, Mark Rose is playing all the saxes. |

Pasque March | ||||||||||
Somewhat Baroque in style, this piece combines compositional rigor with a loose jazz section featuring Joe Caploe on vibes. Saving the drums until the end, this piece really drives to the finish with a pulsing rock rhythm. |
